Art Direction, Design, Curation and Print Production Oversight for the coffee table book "Between the Sea and the Sky," celebrating Dutch heritage through Jimmy Nelson's photography
Jimmy Nelson is renowned for photographing indigenous cultures worldwide, aiming to honor celebrate and share their heritage with a global audience. His latest coffee table book, "Between the Sea and the Sky," offers a 500-page exploration of Dutch heritage with over 350 stunning images. Using a custom 10×8 analogue plate camera, Nelson's photos showcase remarkable detail and a romantic quality reminiscent of Dutch masters.
In my role as Art Director, Designer, and Curator, I was responsible for conceptualizing the visual direction, layout design, graphic elements, and image curation. Collaborating with artist Raphael Rapin, we created intricate Dutch illustrations and handcrafted maps, using a dark blue Pantone to simulate traditional ink and a blend of timeless fonts to ensure a cohesive aesthetic. I also extended my role to oversee print production, achieving premium quality with the support of our Italian printing partner.
Due to high demand, the book had a print run of 25,000 copies in the first year. The Jimmy Nelson Studio managed the publishing process independently through its own imprint, JN Publishing. The book received significant media coverage, particularly in the Netherlands and internationally, leading to the opening of a pop-up gallery in Amsterdam and several museum exhibitions. This project underscores the Studio’s and my mutual dedication to celebrating cultural diversity through compelling visual storytelling.
