Exhibition design for the permanent exhibition “Le créatif”, The creative, displayed at the National Museum of the Democratic Republic of Congo in Kinshasa.
To address the challenge of Angelo Turconi's aged film photographs, I decided to create several collages on panels. This approach allowed the images to be smaller, enhancing their quality and preserving the historical essence. I worked closely with a production team in Amsterdam, meticulously checking the printing files to ensure the best possible print quality.
Angela Fisher and Carol Beckwith, the iconic photographer duo who have spent over 50 years photographing communities in Africa, were invited by the National Museum of DRC  to create a permanent exhibition. The museum houses a vast collection of artifacts and hosts exhibitions that celebrate the cultural and historical legacy of the region.
I collaborated closely with renowned photographers Angela Fisher and Carol Beckwith to design "Le Creatifs," a permanent exhibition featuring 85 photographs that capture the essence of traditional Congolese cultures. The exhibition, inaugurated by U.S. Ambassador Mike Hammer, includes vibrant images of landscapes and cultural ceremonies.
The exhibition was divided into several sections, each dedicated to a specific tribe, collectively showcasing the rich Congolese heritage. The supporting exhibition graphics, including texts, were kept minimal and timeless, using only black and white. This design choice allowed the vibrant pictures to shine and ensured a non-trending, timeless aesthetic suitable for a permanent exhibition.
This first exhibition of its kind was designed to bridge cultural gaps and foster a deeper understanding of the DRC's rich heritage. By showcasing these captivating images, we aimed to provide a platform for the Congolese people to share their stories and traditions with a global audience. Additionally, the exhibition celebrates the special relationship between the DRC and the United States, highlighting the mutual respect and admiration between the two nations.
The "Le créatif" exhibition has become an integral part of the National Museum of Kinshasa, drawing significant attention and praise from visitors and dignitaries alike. It has successfully highlighted the beauty and diversity of Congolese cultures, providing a source of pride for locals and a point of interest for international guests. The collaborative effort with Angela Fisher, Carol Beckwith, and the incorporation of Angelo Turconi's photographs resulted in a visually stunning and culturally significant display that continues to inspire and educate visitors about the incredible heritage of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The minimal and timeless design approach ensures that this permanent exhibition will remain relevant and impactful for decades to come.
